What Gives Your Life Meaning?Reading Time: 2 minutes
What gives your life meaning? And through what purpose do you serve that meaning?
You may not know the answers to those questions now, but putting in the effort to understand your meaning and purpose will instantly improve your life. You will be able to experience meaning immediately through serving your purpose.
The meaning of your life is what brings you value, what makes you feel significant. Your purpose is what you do to welcome that meaning into your life.
For example, what gives my life meaning is making a difference and helping people. I experience those through my purpose: coaching and writing to help people transform their lives.
If you don’t know the meaning or purpose of your life, discovering your personal values is a good place to start. Your values make up who you are and what you desire.
What Austrian neurologist, psychiatrist and Holocaust survivor Viktor Frankl taught us about meaning
Once we understand our meaning, no person or experience can take that away from us. Perhaps nothing illustrates that truth more than the story of Viktor Frankl.
Frankl, the Austrian neurologist and psychiatrist, spent three years of his life as a prisoner in four concentration camps during the Holocaust. His wife, father, mother and brother were killed in concentration camps. And he, too, faced death on multiple occasions. Ultimately, he survived the horrors of the Holocaust and went on to change many lives for the better.
Frankl experienced just about the worst kind of existence one could imagine, but did he give up on life? Of course not. The man wrote a book about how the experience helped him find meaning in his life. Now, “Man’s Search for Meaning” is one of the most popular and inspirational books of all time.
Frankl’s story is one of the most powerful examples of how we possess the power to overcome all challenges and accomplish great things.
In his own words: “Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms—to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s own way.”
