The Value/Energy Scale

Helping You Focus Your Energy on What You Value Most

Reading Time: 7 minutes

I created the Value/Energy Scale to evaluate my life and compare where I am today with where I want to be. Now I am sharing it with you. The ultimate goal of the V/E Scale is to help you focus your energy on what you value most, so you can lead the life you really want. It serves as the foundation of my coaching practice and it is inherent in all my interactions with clients and prospective clients. – Travis Snyder, Life Coach and V/E Creator

You only get one chance at this life.

On average, Americans live to the age of 79. By that measure, more than a quarter of your life is behind you by the time you turn 20. When you hit 30, nearly 38 percent of your life is in the past. At 40, you are beyond the halfway point. By age 50, less than 37 percent of your life is still in front of you. And so on. It’s a sobering reality.

Now imagine waking up on your 79th birthday, with the realization that every day could be your last here on Earth.  And we know that to be true because any day could be our last here on Earth. Another sobering reality.

But it’s the morning of your 79th birthday and you’ve decided to reflect on your life:

  • What do you wish you had accomplished?
  • To whom do you wish you dedicated more of your time?
  • What do you wish you hadn’t feared so much?
  • What opportunities do you wish you had taken?
  • Where do you wish you had traveled?
  • What do you wish you had learned earlier?
  • What do you wish you could say to your 25-year-old self? How about your 35-year-old self? 45? 55?
  • What else did you miss?

And then your focus shifts to the future: What will your biography say? What will future generations know about you and how you lived your life? What will be your story?

If you don’t like your story as it is written today, change it.

The V/E Scale is designed to help you focus your energy on what you value most

How can we evaluate our current life to help us change our story to one filled with meaning and happiness?

For me, it’s by working through what I call the Value/Energy Scale. I devised the concept of the Value/Energy Scale, or the V/E Scale for short, to ensure the value I received from everything I do exceeds or is at least equal to the energy I expend.

Picture a traditional scale with two sides and a balancing beam. Your time and effort (energy) are on one side and the meaning and fulfillment (value) you experience are on the other side. In life, you always want the scale to favor the value side.

The V/E Scale has helped me focus my energy on what I value most. And I want to help you do the same.

The Value/Energy Scale: The five-step process to move you closer to your ideal life

The ultimate goal of the V/E Scale is to help you focus your energy on what you value most, so you can lead the life you really want. It is an evaluation practice that includes envisioning your ideal life and taking inventory of your life as it is now.

Like life coaching, its success depends on the transformational power within you. No one knows the look and feel of your ideal life better than you.

The V/E Scale requires you to think about the quality of your life in four pillars of health:

  • Mental/Emotional: This pillar refers to our ability to be mindful and present in the moment, and our ability to be at peace in our life. This is also where meaning and happiness factor in.
  • Physical: This pillar refers to our actual health and all the vital systems of our body. It also includes our eating and exercising habits.
  • Social: This is the people pillar. It includes all of the people in our lives, including our significant others, family, friends, co-workers and other colleagues.
  • Professional: This pillar refers to our career and our personal finances.

Many of us never take the time to think deeply about the life we really want. It’s easier to believe it’s unrealistic and out of reach, and so we don’t even allow ourselves to dream. But once you get clear on the life you really want, you may find you’re not that far away from your ideal life. Or that your dream life is more attainable than you thought.

Follow these V/E Scale steps and allow yourself to dream:

Step 1: Discover your personal values

Reading Time: 7 minutes
The first step of the V/E Scale is discovering your personal values so that you have a clear understanding of what you value most. What motivates you? What gives you energy? When are you the happiest?

To reach the life you desire, your values must be fulfilled in each of the four pillars of health. V/E offers a free three-step guide to help you get clear on your values or you can discover them through your own research and introspection.

Step 2: Envision your ideal life

Reading Time: 7 minutes
The next step in the V/E Scale is envisioning your ideal life through the four pillars of health. Really think about the life you want. Imagine you are living in it. Allow yourself to let go of your limiting beliefs for a moment and dream about your ideal life for each pillar. Close your eyes if you’d like. It may also help to write down what comes to mind.

What are your behaviors? How do you talk to others? Where and how do you spend your time? What do you do when faced with a challenge? How do you carry yourself?

Note: During this exercise, it’s important to focus on the things that are in your control. For example, if you have a chronic medical condition and you feel like your life can’t be a 10 because of it, try to reframe your mindset and factor in only the aspects of your life you can change.

As you explore each pillar, think about what all is involved in your ideal life. Your mind may wander to a specific vision or provide more abstract clues. Either way, take note of any details that come up. Consider each of the primary questions: Who? What? When? Where? Why? How?

Also take time to fully recognize how you feel in that ideal life. It’s important to remember those strong feelings when you start to work toward your dreams and fear sets in. Are those feelings of meaning, happiness and freedom worth pushing through any and every challenge?

Step 3: Assess your life today

Reading Time: 7 minutes
Next, it’s time to evaluate your life as it is today for each of the four pillars. Using a 1-10 scale, with 10 being the ideal life you envisioned in step two and 1 being your worst life where you experience no meaning or happiness, and none of your values are fulfilled. A 5 is neither happy nor unhappy, it’s merely existing and going through the motions. A six and above represent varying levels of meaning, happiness and value fulfillment, while four and below represent varying levels of unhappiness and lack of meaning, and little to no value fulfillment.

Take the time to assess your life as it is now and create a chart with your current scores:

Step 4: Bridge the gap

Reading Time: 7 minutes
You now have a strong understanding of where you are and where you want to be. It’s time to determine how to bridge that gap.

Now that you know your personal values, how can you better incorporate them into each pillar of health? What changes do you need to make?

A few questions to ponder for each pillar of health to help you bridge the gap:

  • Mental/Emotional: How can you spend more of your time focusing on the present and less on regretting the past or fearing the future? How can you create more space in your calendar to dedicate more time to yourself? How can you feel more at peace with your life?
  • Physical: How can you become more comfortable with your body? What healthy, sustainable eating and exercising habits can you start to help you feel better physically? How can you find a balance between eating the foods you want and being happy with your body? What exercise activities or sports can you take up that you’ll actually enjoy?
  • Social: What relationships do you need to strengthen? What new relationships do you need to create? What toxic relationships do you need to end? How can you share your personal values with your loved ones so they can better support you? Conversely, how can you make an effort to learn your loved ones personal values and support them?
  • Professional: What purpose can you serve through your career to create more meaning in your life? What work would energize you rather than deplete you? Who do you want to help through your work?

Our lives up to this point provide excellent clues into the life we really want. Here are some questions to help you get in that mindset: When have you felt the most significant? When have you been the happiest? When have you felt most alive? Who were you with? Where were you? What were you doing? What have you experienced that you want more of in your life?

Step 5: Take action

Reading Time: 7 minutes
Use all of the information you have gathered about yourself to recalibrate your life. Start to close the gap between where you are today and where you really want to be. Determine the changes you need to make to reach all 10s in your life and then execute on those actions. Never forget the feeling of living your ideal life. It’ll help you overcome all challenges and remind you of the meaning, happiness and freedom that will surround you.

Don’t Wait: Start Living the Life You Really Want Today

As we know, we’re not guaranteed our full 79 years of life. We’re not even guaranteed one more day.

In his book “The Untethered Soul”, author Michael A. Singer shares a hypothetical story of the day the Angel of Death comes for you.

In the story, Death appears before you and says, “Come, it’s time to go.” You push back: “But no. You’re supposed to give me a warning so I can decide what I want to do with my last week. I’m supposed to get one more week.”

Death responds: “My God! I gave you fifty-two weeks this past year alone. And look at all the other weeks I’ve given you. Why would you need one more? What did you do with all those?”

Starting today, appreciate the time you have and the incredible opportunity you’ve been given. Fill your life with meaning and happiness, overcome your fears and commit to focusing your energy on what you value most.
