Hey, I’m Travis, life coach and creator of Value Over Energy. And this is my story.
My story is one of frustration, fear, anger, doubt, limiting beliefs and – ultimately, I hope, inspiration.
You see, I am not and never will be a “work-to-live” person. I’m not someone who can stay at an unfulfilling job for 40+ years and count on my few weeks of vacation a year to come alive and live the life I really want.
Early in my career, I was doing exactly what I was trying to to avoid so badly – working to live.
During that time, a common theme persisted: I wanted to be fulfilled and make a meaningful impact through my work.
At different points during that time, I was dejected, lost, annoyed, stressed, bitter, sad and, more than anything, I felt hopeless.
How I conducted a career audit to define my future career path
Finally, I resolved to complete what I call a “personal audit.” I was going to take the time to understand who I was and discover what kind of career I really wanted.
Not exactly knowing where to begin, I leveraged various channels, such as books, online assessments and career counselors. Eventually, I found my way.
I organized all the information I gathered, including my personal values, character strengths, behavior and personality types, skills and interests, and more, into one document. Then, I studied it for clues. And I came back days, weeks, and months later to study it again. Along the way, I picked up on clues throughout the document that eventually led me to clearly define my path forward.
The work I had put into understanding myself, and what I truly wanted out of my career, paid off. Through my analysis, I knew that continuing my career in communications and being able to coach others in their careers would directly align with my personal values (Happiness, Personal Fulfillment, Freedom, Making a Difference and Humor) and provide me with work I loved.
To that end, I enrolled in a life coach training program. I participated in the initial session during the first week of March 2020. By the last week of March, I was laid off from my corporate job and my world had completely changed.
Typically, the day you lose your job is one of the worst days of your professional life. But for me, I knew I had an opportunity to discover meaningful work through my next opportunity.
Because I had completed my personal audit, I was able to weather my job being eliminated and set clear goals for my future career.
And that’s exactly what I am doing.
How I work with unfulfilled professionals to design meaningful careers that align with their personal values
Today, I work with unfulfilled professionals to design meaningful careers that align with their personal values.
I know the frustration and the pain of working to live when you’re not a “work-to-live” person. I understand how that takes a toll on every part of your life, from your health to your relationships.
It took me a long time to break free of that depressing reality, but I’m so grateful I put in the work to make it happen. And it started by making a decision to focus my energy on discovering who I was and what I really wanted through my career.
I didn’t do it all on my own, though. I worked with a career professional to get an objective perspective and offer clues toward my ideal career.
Now, I help people – people like you – create meaningful careers they love. I’ve taken what I’ve learned and made the process more efficient. As a result, I help people find their ideal careers more quickly so they can live the life they really want.
Through the “Design Your Career” program, I work with people to complete their own personal audit so they can create a meaningful career. And my life coach services help my clients achieve their career goals.
If you are ready to work with me to discover a career you love, don’t hesitate to reach out. If you have a question or you’d like to share your career success story with me, send me a message.
Thanks for reading my story,
